Harbors?
Ok I am a little rusty but i thought that if you had two harbors on different islands that I would be able to build swordsman or what ever I could build on the main land.

Comments:
I replied to Gary on this in an email, but here's my paraphrased version with mroe detail for everyone else.

Based on the fact that he is mentioning Swordsman, I assume this is early in the game. Harbors are connected by "coast" squares (light blue) only when map making is discovered (map making gives you Harbors).

You can not trade over Sea Squares (normal blue) until you (or the Civ you are trading with) discovers Astronomy. So, in between your cities it matters only what you have discovered.

Last, but not least, Navigation is the Tech that let's you trade over Ocean Squares (dark blue). In my opinion, this what makes Navigation very valualbe for both your own cities as well as trading with the AI. At least on non-Panagea Maps.

Ok, does that make it all clear as mud?
